IN CHARACTER INFORMATION
Name: Gloria Ruston
Canon: The Vulpine Imperium, which is very loosely based on Brian Jacques' Redwall
OU/AU/OC: OC
Canon Point: Just after the Imperium forces discover a hidden entrance within the palace that leads to a great treasure.

History: Lady Gloria Kildare-Ruston is the Countess of Truffell and Captain of the Stoatorian Guard in the Vulpine Imperium (VI). It is a small island empire off the coast of the Mahsterious Southern Continent. In short: The Vulpine Imperium is a nation of buccaneers that have collectively decided they like having some semblance of social services and order in their plundering. As the name would imply, it is run by a fox and has been since its founding. Beneath the Emperor are five ministries: War, Innovation, Niceties, Misanthropy, and Commerce. Each, in turn, runs a faction that carries out various functions related to the ministry. The Stoatorian Guard falls under the banner of the Ministry of War, and acts as the VI's National Guard and Army.

Gloria was trained from a very young age to take on her role as Guard Captain. Her father held the position before her, and his father before him, and so on. This training was often hard, vicious, and physically and emotionally scarring for Gloria. She grew up believing that torture and violence were the appropriate ways to deal with conflict and developed a particularly cruel streak to cope with the abuse that had been directed at her. Regardless, she eventually worked her way up through the ranks of the Guard, taking on the role of Captain upon her father's death.

She was promised to her husband, Gerard Reginald "Regi" Ruston, for an advantageous marriage at the age of 10 (he was 18 at the time) and they had an extended engagement that lasted until Gloria became pregnant with their first children. Gloria was a Lieutenant in the Stoatorian Guard at the time and Regi was a Skillblade in the Unsmudgables, a faction associated with protecting the arts (violently when needed) under the Ministry of Niceties. They had two kits named Deephart and Blithe. Two years after that, they had another pair: IceRain and Pylaris. All of their kits were named after former Ministers of War in a show of patriotism and pride in their country.

Unfortunately, that fanatical patriotism led to the deaths of every one of her kits before their 21st birthdays. Gloria executed Blithe after he destroyed a vitally important exhibit during a diplomatic event. Deephart died in service to the Ministry of Innovations. She killed IceRain in a fit of pique after a heated argument about patriotic devotion that ended with IceRain chopping off Gloria's left paw. And she allowed Pylaris to be tortured to death after discovering he was acting as a spy for the Southern Empire, a rival nation to the south.

Pylaris' death kicks off the major action in a war between the VI and the Southern Empire when the greatest changes for Gloria (and the Imperium) take place. Gloria is placed in charge of repelling the southern assault on Bully Harbor, the main port within the Vulpine Imperium. It lies to the south of the capitol city of Amarone. Over the course of several weeks, Gloria and the Imperium forces suffered heavy casualties and were forced to retreat as General Lock, the fox in charge of the Southern Army, advanced.

Over the course of the battles as they were pushed back, Gloria grew closer with a childhood acquaintance named Captain Wazzock Pike. He was a naval captain sent to assist the land forces after the Imperial Navy was defeated off the coast. Wazzock, being the polar opposite of Gloria in terms of temperament and patriotism, grated on her constantly. He balanced her style, though, and she came to trust him and his odd (and somewhat traitorous) ways after he saved her life from General Lock.

Even before reaching Amarone, Gloria and Wazzock began to notice something amiss with the war and the motivations for it. They were informed early that the Southern Empire were after a mysterious weapon that one of the previous Ministers of Innovation had developed. Once in the palace, meeting with Emperor Voss and his ministers, Wazzock's suspicions continued to mount as Gloria tried to explain away her own.

At the point of the story that she is taken from, Gloria has just been stripped of command of the land forces (with Wazzock being granted authority in her place), learned that the Minister of War was in cahoots with the Southern Empire in trying to get the weapon out of the VI, and begun tracking down the whereabouts of that weapon with Wazzock, the Emperor, and several other beasts. The entrance to a secret passage within the palace was opened by on of these other beasts, but they have no way in due to an absurdly excessive amount of booby trapping. Gloria is at one of her lowest moments as her faith in her emperor has begun to waver, and her country is losing the war.

Personality: To describe Gloria in two words: violently patriotic. This is a stoat who had her son tortured and killed after discovering that he was a spy working against the Imperium. She is a sadist who delights in dominating others and watching them squirm. After growing up under the claw of an extremely exacting and abusive father and distant mother, it's impaired Gloria's own parental skills and warped her perceptions to the point that she imagines murdering three out of four of her children was right. She loved her children enough to sacrifice them for the Imperium.

Possessions: Her Captain of the Guard coat and sword, plus a purse of golden gilders.
